Women Against Military Madness, WAMM, has protested against a promotion that the Minnesota Twins have planned for this holiday. The Twins were going to give to 5000 lucky kids that attended the game a GI Joe action figure.
Now, what could be more patriotic than that? We have soldiers halfway around the world in harm's way and the Twins want to give children "toy soldiers." I think it's a wonderful way for children to think about the wonderful men and women that are making their world safer. And this being the 4th of July, INDEPENDENCE DAY, what an appropriate time to present this to the children. It was self-sacrifice that brought this country into being and reminding our children of that CONTINUING sacrifice is a good thing.
But not to the brownshirts within WAMM. In their eyes, we're teaching children to be killers! So I suppose if we gave them baseball bats, we'd be teaching them to be baseball players. What do you propose that the marketing department of the Twins give them? Barbie dolls? Then wouldn't the children all want to be fashion models? Or the little boys want to be girls?
Maybe WAMM would be happier if the Twins were giving away John Kerry action figures. Here's a war hero/war protestor! Complete with his own 1/6 scale pair of flip-flops and a chest full of medals to throw over an imaginary White House fence! Maybe they could even have the toy made in France.
Actually, this whole affair smacks of French involvement. I knew that any protest against America's military would have to have a French connection. So I looked into it.
WAMM is chaired by Mary Beaudoin. Need I say more?
