Here it is, November 2007, and you would think that the 2008 Presidential election had already been held. The media has already anointed Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton as their respective parties candidates without going through the tedious primaries and conventions. These are the candidates we will have to choose from because the media has deemed it.
This will be the sorryest presidential field I have ever seen in my 40-plus years. Choosing between Hillary and Rudy is like choosing between Hitler and Himmler - both are bad choices.
Anyone that frequents this blog knows that Hillary will not get my vote. So, let's talk about Rudy Giuliani, the Man of the Sheeple. My distaste for Rudy started back in 1994 when he helped Bill Clinton get the Assault Weapons Ban passed. In case you don't know, the AWB was the purported to be the answer to runaway crime because the FBI's crime statistics showed that most violent crime that involved firearms were perpetrated with handguns. Oh, I'm sorry, it didn't make sense to me either - the statistics showed handguns were the usual tool for the criminals not assault weapons but assault weapons look more evil. Yes, Rudy stumped for banning assault weapons because they look evil. So much for his claim that he's tough on crime.
Rudy also make the ultimate gaffe when he was mayor of NYC when it was discovered by us Virginians that we were accepting NYC waste into our landfills. I wasn't happy about it but it was a business decision and I could accept it. Except when Rudy got wind of our citizens' unhappiness about it and stated that VIrginians had an obligation to take NYC's trash because of all the cultural things it provides us. Oh yeah - he said that! After that statement, I knew everything I would ever need to know about Rudy Giuliani.
Rudy has never seen anti-gun legislation that he couldn't sign. Rudy is the stereotypical New Yorker - knows better than the rest of us what's good for us, especially those of us south of the Mason-Dixon. How is Rudy any different than Hillary?
Calling Rudy "America's Mayor" is every bit as offensive as calling my beloved Dallas Cowboys "America's Team" is to Redskin fans. He's not MY mayor! And he won't be my president either. If the choice comes down to Rudy or Hillary, you may as well tell Hillary to get the moving van packed because Rudy will not under any circumstances carry the conservative South, without which, no Republican can win. We will stay home and start caching our valuables for the coming dark years (which we would have to do if somehow Rudy won too.)
I cannot believe that the GOP cannot find a conservative candidate. I like Fred Thompson but he is Johnny-come-lately to the race and his appeal to me might be that he's not Giuliani-Romney-McCain. At least Fred and I see eye-to-eye on Constitutional issues and he appears to be the most conservative of the current crop. But Rudy is the front-runner and the news media are hell-bent to make sure it stays that way. The media is afraid of Romney because of his being a religious man and they know that may play well in the Bible-belt but Romney's gun rights voting record is every bit as atrocious as Rudy's.
That leaves our war hero, John McCain. McCain is certainly a hero given his service record. But Democrats love McCain and you have to ask yourself why. I believe the reason they love McCain is that he was the lone Republican involved in the Keating 5 scandal back in the 1980's. The only reason he didn't get crucified back then because the Dems went easy on him in return for going easy on their guys. But, it is the "skeleton' in McCain's closet, waiting for the Dems to exploit it. But regardless of that shortfall, McCain is also horrible with regard to gun rights and is therefore, unelectable in the South.
I don't like picking nominees based on the term "electability" but if electability does truly exist then none of these candidates are electable because the GOP needs the South to be able to win and right now, the South will not back any of those 3 candidates.
Rudy, Mitt, and John play very well in the big urban cities of the North but they don't play well down here and I beleive it's because they people up North gave up their rights a long time ago and became sheeple. Sheeple follow whatever government edict comes down the pike regardless of what rights are infringed upon. Sheeple accept totalitarian rules and confiscatory taxation. Sheeple like being told what to do and how to do it. Sheeple watch the evening news and believe the spin that they are given. Sheeple don't understand the basis of this country or how government is supposed to work.
We don't have many sheeple down here and I like it that way. Under any of the candidates, Rudy/Mitt/John M/Hillary/Barack/John E, we will all become sheeple. And I can't tolerate that. Let's hope that we Southerners and fellow Americans find a candidate worthy of our support and get him elected. Before we become sheeple.
