The Primaries - Isn't it wonderful to watch the Democrats destroy themselves? Especially watching Hillary resort to her usual Clintonista tactics and have them blow up in her face because her opponent is black? And aren't you just hoping that the empty suit is the Democrat nominee this fall? What fun this election is going to be! And the biggest lesson to take away from all of this is that we now have incontrovertible evidence of which party is guilty of disenfranchising voters - just ask the citizens of Michigan and Florida.
More Primaries - We have dodged a couple of bullets as conservatives in that Giuliani and Romney are out of the race but we unfortunately are faced with the realization that the only real conservatives worth voting for, Thompson and Huckabee, are also watching from the sidelines now. I really liked Fred and I liked Huckabee. I don't trust McCain. He's doing alot of shifting to the right lately and it doesn't square with his voting record. And the other thing he has in his closet that's going to provide the Dems with campaign fodder is the Keating scandal. I can't in good conscience vote for McCain and it's not because of the Keating scandal. I has to do with his voting record on immigration and the Second Amendment. Sorry, can't do it - unless he picks a true Sountern Conservative for his running mate. Then I'll consider it. Otherwise, hello Libertarians!
Gun violence - Yes, there has been a disturbingly large number of mass shootings of late but an equally disturbing lack of objective media coverage regarding the common denominator in these slayings. Every one of the killers had a documented history of mental problems and were supposed to be on medication. That trend include the killer that walked into a health clinic and hacked a doctor to death with a meat cleaver. The only common denominator is the mental health of the killers, not the weapon used. The shooting in Utah would have been worse had there not been someone present that was armed and stopped the killer. Had there been an armed citizen present in all of the instances, the killers would have been thwarted. Guns don't kill, people kill. I'm sure it's not the first time you've heard that. Gun free zones are shooting galleries for criminals - maybe it is time for you to hear that a few times - we certainly have ample evidence of that now.
The War in Iraq - Ever since the success of the troop surge, the poll numbers for Dem-led congress has plummeted to "sub-Bush" levels. And public polls also indicate that it's not as important to just pull the troops out as it was 12 months ago - now, the public demands that we win before we get out. What a novel concept!!! In it to win it!!! Hopefully, this epiphany by the sheeple will lead to the demise of Dem-control of Congress.
Immigration - Why is it so hard for some people to see this problem for what it is - it is a Mexican-government endorsed invasion of our country. Until we have the cojones to frame the problem this way, we will be on the path to losing our country. How come we can unleash the FBI and BATFE on our own citizens for "probable cause" but we can't get the paramilitary arms of these organizations to carry out the same type of jackbooted raids on illegals? What's wrong with that picture? Hell, we invaded Mexico for less than that back in 1916. It was called a punitive expedition. Maybe it's time to do that again - maybe it's time to do a little housecleaning in our own hemisphere? Who's gonna stop us? Chavez? Bring it on Hugo!
Taxes - When are we going to dump the current tax code? Thanks to LBJ and the Great Society, we have grown the tax code into the most perverse wealth redistribution system ever known to mankind and allowed politicians the power to buy votes. It needs to stop now! We need the FairTax, which is a consumption tax, not an income tax. Everyone will pay it every time they buy a new product or purchase a service. It means that the rich guy will pay it when he buys his yacht and the poor guy will pay it when he buys his liquor - the only way to avoid it is to stop buying stuff. The beauty is that wit the FairTax, your income is yours to keep and spend however you want. The interest on your savings and investments is yours to keep and spend however you want. And when you die, if you manage to save something to give to your children, it's theirs and not the government's! That's fair. If we don't do something soon, the current tax code will not have enough revenue generated to pay the interest on the national debt as early as 2040. I know that's still within my lifetime and it's definitely within my children's lifetimes and I can't leave them with that tragedy. I urge everyone to read about the FairTax at Fairtax.org and be the judge for yourself.
Sports - Yes, I am a huge sports fan, particularly football. For a long time, I chalked up the Patriots' fortunes to being in a crappy, loser-division. What NFL fan wouldn't want their favorite team to have the Dolphins/Jets/Bills on their schedule twice a season? But when the Spygate thing came out early this season, it all started to look like more than just luck of division geography. The proof was in the Super Bowl - the Pats were under so much scrutiny for the Spygate thing amidst new allegations that they couldn't maintain their modus operandi of videotaping the first half signals and apparently, the Giants had changed their signals since their regular season meeting. Belicheck and the Cheatriots get exposed for all to see and suddenly, 17-1 is a hideous record to have. I told my kids are the conclusion of the game that it shows that cheaters never win. 17-1 was a revered record for the 49ers and the Bears but the Patriots made it suck to be 17-1. Now, Congress (which I don't agree with - there are more important things to be done by our elected officials than to look into cheating in the NFL) wants to investigate but so what? What's it going to change? It's in the books now.
Britney Spears - Does anyone really care about this topic? It's like the whole Anna Nicole Smith thing all over again - 24/7 coverage of someone who doesn't deserve the time of day. At least Britney was talented - I won't go into what talent Anna Nicole possessed. But this whole soap opera is one of Britney's own creation and I am tired of wasting air time to broadcast it. Apparently, it's like crack - the sheeple can't get enough.
Valerie Bertinelli - Val, I am so disappointed in you. Steven Spielberg? If you were hanking for a kosher boy, you could have done David Lee Roth - at least that would have made the DLR-VH feud more understandable. I'm just totally disappointed in you. And, you didn't get the part in "Indiana Jones" so was it worth it?
Tony Romo - Tony, I don't blame you for going to Mexico with Jessica Simpson. I've gone to Mexico with her several times and it's a great time (okay, not really - just in my dreams). But you knew based on the media circus caused by the Philadelphia game when Jessica was making a spectacle of herself that going to Mexico with her was going to raise some eyebrows, especially if the Cowboys didn't beat the Giants. I personally know that the trip had nothing to do with your performance, in fact, I don't know how you could have played any better. If anything, your teammates let you down. You can't catch the ball for your receivers. You can't control whether your offensive linemen flinch or wobble at the line of scrimmage. It's not the off-field discipline that needs to be addressed. It's the on-field discipline that needs work. Tony, you're the leader of this team, so it falls to you to rally the boys and work on that discipline. Go Cowboys!
Baseball - Barry Bonds. Juicer. Jose Canseco. Juicer. Mark McGuire. Juicer. Roger Clemens (and apparently, his wife too.) Juicer. Sammy Sosa. Juicer. Does anybody really care anymore? Does anyone really care about the distinction between what was officially banned and what could not be tested for? Isn't this really about professional honesty and integrity? This was a game that most of us grew up playing and loving. We all had baseball heroes that we looked up to. And not all of them were paragons of virtue but they all played the game by the rules. I'm done with major league baseball (I have been for a long time). They striked multiple times for money and now that they're getting that money, they have to juice to be profitable. Oh, boo-hoo. Let's all shed a tear for the misunderstood baseball players. The only tear I'm shedding is for the past-time that has been destroyed by a bunch of greedy, self-absorbed, spoiled athletes. I'll still go to my local minor league games because, aside from fishing, there's no better place to blow an afternoon or evening than sitting in a ballpark with a big sloppy chili/cheese/sauerkraut dog in one hand and an ice cold 32-ounce beer in the other. It doesn't get any better than that.
Global Warming - When is it going to happen? I've already contacted my lawyer about suing Al Gore because I sold all of my coats and winter clothes in anticipation of global warming. He's been yapping about it for at least 20 years and it still hasn't happened!!! Mr. Gore, you will be taking me shopping very soon for winter wear because winter keeps happening despite your predictions!
Global Warming, Part II - Has anyone else noticed that alot of the media has stopped referring to global warming as "global warming"? The new term is "climate change." I guess since there is so much scientific evidence to the contrary regarding "global warming" that "climate change" became easier to defend because climate change happens nearly every three months. It used to be called "seasons."
Michael Vick - I don't believe that Michael Vick will ever play quarterback in the NFL again. The reason is twofold - the QB position is a leadership position and his reputation is so tarnished that he will not find an NFL team willing to gamble their team's fortunes on whether or not Vick can still lead - and secondly, 23 months (not including the pre-sentencing period) is a long time for a professional athlete in his mid-to-late career to go without intense physical training to maintain his ability. Vick won't be ready to play footbal for quite a while after his imprisonment. It's truly a shame given what a tremendous athlete Vick is and the opportunity that he has squandered. Hopefully, if anything good can come from this whole debacle, Vick can show youngsters from similar backgrounds to his own that money and fame doesn't equal acceptance of unacceptable behavior. Those homies that are following you around, living off of your income, and telling you that you "ain't black anymore" because the money has changed you - you don't need them as bad as they need you. I bet none of Vick's homies offered to help defer his legal fees...I'll bet they haven't even sent him a card since he's been in jail.
Recession - I've been hearing about this recession for 2 years now. Where is it? Yeah, the housing bubble burst but we have more new homes on the market than there are wage earners to purchase them so you kind of saw that coming. And a lot of people bought into mortgages that they had no business signing onto and buying starter mansions when they should have bought the little cottages. Shame on you for having eyes bigger than your wallet. Oil keeps going up but I still don't see a recession. Why? Because a recesssion by definition is two consecutive quarters with zero or negative economic growth and, despite all the doom and gloom, that hasn't happened yet. The economy may have slowed but it hasn't stopped and it hasn't slipped. The main reason consumers think there's a recession is the same reason that we have the mortgage crisis - people gambled on their wages keeping pace with their adjustable rate mortgages and it didn't happen. Especially when gas costs more so there goes a sizeable chunk of your paycheck as well. Don't get mad if you lose your farm if you bet your farm. I will go totally apeshit if the government steps in to bail these people and the mortgage companies out. Don't do it. You will definitely see a recession then.
Recession, Part II - More signs that there is no recession - been to your local mall lately? I was at Tyson's Corner in Northern Virginia this weekend and there was no shortage of shoppers willing to pay ridiculous amounts at boutique-like stores. There was a lot of money changing hands. Recession, my ass!
Lacy Peterson/Stacy Peterson - One thing to learn from these cases is this: if your name is Kasey, Macy, or Tracy, don't get married to a guy with the last name of Peterson. It's not worth it.
Gun rights -
LANCASTER, Pa. - The family of a middle school student who was given detention for wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of a gun has filed a federal freedom of speech lawsuit against the school district. Donald Miller III, 14, went to Penn Manor High School in December wearing a T-shirt he said was intended to honor his uncle, a U.S. Army soldier fighting in Iraq. The shirt bears the image of a military sidearm and on the front pocket says "Volunteer Homeland Security." On the back, over another image of the weapon, are the words "Special issue Resident Lifetime License — United States Terrorist Hunting Permit — Permit No. 91101 — Gun Owner — No Bag Limit." Officials at the Millersville school told him to turn his shirt inside out. When Miller refused, he got two days of detention. His parents, Donald and Tina Miller of Holtwood, have accused the Penn Manor School District in a lawsuit of violating their son's First Amendment rights with a "vague Orwellian policy" that stifles both patriotism and free speech. But an attorney for the school district said school must create a safe environment for students in the post-Columbine era, and bringing even the image of a gun to school violates the district's policy. "There's a much higher level of sensitivity these days," Penn Manor attorney Kevin French said. "But it's based on reality." The lawsuit was filed in January. A federal judge will hold a conference on the case March 31.Instead of all of this liberal-candy-ass hand-wringing every time there's even a mention of the word "gun," maybe we should take a page from the liberal play book and demand that our schools educate our children about firearms safety - kind of the way they want to educate our children about safe sex. Irrational fear of firearms is bred in ignorance, much like irrational fear of most things that aren't understood.
Gun rights, Part II - Wouldn't you know it! Somebody had already taken the Sniper's idea and implemented it!
A significant drop in the number of hunters in West Virginia has left a hole in the state's budget, and one lawmaker thinks he has a solution: Allow children to receive hunter training in school. Seventh- through ninth-graders could opt for instruction in topics ranging from survival skills to gun safety, but the weapons would have dummy ammunition or be disabled. Sen. Billy Wayne Bailey, who introduced the bill this month, doesn't envision students firing real guns during class time. "It's a way to take this kind of education in the classroom and make it more convenient for young people," said Bailey, a Wyoming County Democrat. West Virginia, where roughly 320,000 people participated in the recent two-week gun season for bucks, may be the only state contemplating such a bill, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. It may not be strictly for the purposes of educating children about firearms for the sake of firearms but it is a start. Personally, I think the course should be part of the civics/history lesson as opposed to the physical education/health class but I like the fact that it's going to get done. By the way, the bill passed.
Eliot Spitzer - Didn't you learn anything from Rudy Giuliani? Dude, if you're going be a cheater, don't hire a professional. There's plenty of free booty to be had in New York political circles. So, did you get her a train ticket to DC because she couldn't get one of those illegal immigrant driver's licenses and she couldn't drive? You should have used the name "Ron Mexico" not "George Fox."
Rap music and cellphone texting - Don't think these two things have much in common? Ask most middle-schoolers to spell a word that features more than a couple syllables and you'll see what I mean. It wasn't bad enough that the kids were listening to rap music that features a bunch of illiterates making up monosyllabic grunts that rhyme but now we have text messaging that features a short burst of letters that spell absolutely nothing but represent whole words. It really chaps my ass that I had to pay 15 cent for my kid to send "IDK" to her "BFF". 2000 messages L8R, I'm $300 in the hole. So, texting, coupled with the dumbing down of music by rap, means that this generation of children will likely be less educated than our great-great-great grandparents' generation that grew up in the Appalachian mountains. You know, maybe the whole premise behind "Planet of the Apes" had some merit. At the current rate of dis-education, the apes may overtake us humans as the dominant species on this planet.
