Another Natural Disaster - A Different Public Response

The states of Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri have been hit with a flood that might occur once every 500 years. It is biblical in its enormity. Iowa is probably the hardest hit of the flooded states.

Why aren't all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons and asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods? Where is Kanye West when Iowans need him? Why isn't the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem?

Where are all the FEMA trucks and trailers? Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowans to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines? Where is Sean Penn with his loaded shotgun in his rescue boat?

Where are all the 24/7 lurid news tales of cannibalism and unnecessary drownings? Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

Why did Iowans evacuate so prematurely? Why didn't they wait until the local government holed them up in deathtrap sports centers? When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it? Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

Why are the Iowans not complaining more and demanding to be saved? How come in about 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

It's been nearly 3 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf coast and the only part of the Gulf coast that hasn't recovered at all is New Orleans because New Orleans expects the Federal government to do it for them.

The people of Iowa know the inherent risks of flooding and have accepted that this sort of disaster will eventually come. And it truly has. But you won't see these people begging the Federal government to rescue them.

A year from now, Iowa will be back on its feet and life returned to its normal flow. The reason is that Iowans prepare for this eventuality and don't expect to be bailed out. It is such a stark contrast to the entitlement mentality of the people of New Orleans. Sadly, those people are still sitting on the asses waiting for the Federal government to deliver them from their impoverished state but, at the end of the day, they have been sitting on their asses their entire lives waiting for that same deliverance, blaming everyone but themselves for their lot in life.

The people of the Big Easy could learn alot from Iowans but they will probably just blame the Iowans for their problems too.
